Job Point Announces Free Classes in Partnership with City of Columbia - August 14, 2012

Through funding assistance from the City of Columbia, Job Point is now offering free classes to City of Columbia residents.  Based on financial need, individuals may qualify for training in the following areas:

BASIC COMPUTER OPERATION – 40 hours

 

Job candidates who possess computer skills are better prepared for work in today’s economy.  Through this class you will learn the various electronic components required to use a computer; how to navigate the Internet, perform basic online searches, set up an E-mail account, practice attaching documents, and utilize appropriate E-mail etiquette. Classes are offered on Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings from 9:00am to 12:30pm on an ongoing basis at 2116 Nelwood Drive, Ste. 200, Columbia, MO.  Call 573-777-1524 for more information.

INTERNET JOB SEARCH – 40 hours

Computer skills are essential for job seeking in today’s high-tech environment, as more and more business utilize an on-line application system.  In this class, you will gain basic Word skills for developing a resume and cover letter.  Register on Missouri’s statewide job database (jobs.mo.gov), as well as, various other job search sites.  Create a tracking system for online applications, passwords, Personal Identification Numbers, security questions, etc.  Establish alerts for job openings, receive tips for completing online applications, and become practiced at online screening assessments.  Classes are offered on Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings from 9:00am to 12:30pm on an ongoing basis at 2116 Nelwood Drive, Ste. 200, Columbia, MO.  Call 573-777-1524 for more information.

CERTIFIED NURSING ASSISTANT—8 weeks

Enter the growing health care field as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) in only 8 weeks, through 75 hours of classroom and 100 hours of clinical experience at a long term care facility.  This class offers students an introduction to: the requirements, roles, responsibilities, and work environment of a Certified Nursing Assistant, understanding the elderly, safety, food service, personal care, elimination, and restorative nursing.  The cost of certification tests and exams are included.  Career opportunities such as home health aides, nursing aides, orderlies and attendants abound in hospitals, skilled nursing facilities, assisted living centers, residential care facilities and home care agencies.  Classes are offered quarterly with the next start date scheduled for August 27, with programming held on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday evenings 5:30-9:30pm, at 400 Wilkes Boulevard, Columbia, MO.  Call 573-777-1524 for more information.

HIGHWAY/HEAVY CONSTRUCTION—16 weeks

Prepare for a career in this recession-proof, high wage trade.  Highway/Heavy Construction training utilizes an industry-recognized curriculum from the National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER).  Field experience will occur through paid internships established with the City of Columbia and County of Boone Public Works Departments.  The course includes basic safety, construction math, hand tools, power tools, construction drawings, basic rigging (ropes, chains, hoists, loaders, and cranes), basic communication skills, basic employability skills, materials handling, trucks, heavy equipment, cranes and forklifts, below grade construction, earthmoving, plant operations, paving and structures.  Graduates will be equipped for positions such as concrete finisher, construction equipment operator, highway maintenance worker, paving, surfacing and tamping equipment operator upon completion.  Classes are offered at specific times throughout the year with the next scheduled start date in November 2012.  Programming is held Monday – Friday, 8:00am-3:30pm, at 400 Wilkes Boulevard, Columbia, MO.  Call 573-777-1583 for more information.
