Success Story

ElTonya Rhoades was a single parent living in public housing in 2008.  She had not worked in three years, and was living on cash assistance and food stamps.  Through a partnership with Columbia Housing Authority (CHA) and Job Point, ElTonya saw an opportunity for a better life for herself and her son.  She enrolled in Job Point’s Office Support Specialist training, and progressed quickly.  After graduation, she also completed Job Point’s employment search program.  Eager to continue learning and build her resume, ElTonya accepted a temporary position as a cashier at the University Bookstore during winter rush.  When a receptionist position became available at the Columbia Housing Authority, ElTonya was hired.  She provided outstanding customer service, due to being in the same situation herself only months before, as those who walked into the office seeking help.  Phil Steinhaus, CHA Executive Director said, “Her welcoming and respectful attitude helped create a good first impression and reduced possible tension and conflict arising from the stress of housing needs.”  After one year, ElTonya was promoted to Executive Assistant.  Of her experience, she stated, “My life has changed.  I have gained confidence in being a parent, because I am able to provide for my family. I am confident in learning new things, and have gained motivation and perseverance.  I have really grown up and learned to be understanding of others.”  Not quite content yet, ElTonya is enrolled in the University of Phoenix’s online program with the goal of a degree in Business Administration.  Job Point congratulates ElTonya for her exemplary personal and vocational achievements!
